Welcome to BIDMC Neurology

Harvard BIDMC – Boston Children’s Hospital Neurology Residency Program How to Apply

How To Apply

Thank you for your interest in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Neurology Residency Training Program. We have 8 adult Neurology positions each year. Applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) which begins taking applications in August. Our program is a 3-year ‘Advanced’ program, officially listed as the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School Program. Our NRMP Code is 1256180A0.

We recommend that all application material be submitted through ERAS by October 15th. The (final) deadline for completion of applications is November 15th, although we begin interview invitations with the applications arriving earlier.

Preliminary Year:
Our Neurology residency program is ‘Advanced’ i.e. a 3 year program, and applicants must apply separately for a one-year preliminary Medicine Internship, at BIDMC or elsewhere. Internships must include at least 8 months of Internal Medicine and no more than 2 months of Neurology rotations.

  • The Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center offers a superb and popular Preliminary Internship in Medicine, and we recommend it highly. The Neurology and Medicine departments at BIDMC cooperate in a “linked MedNeuro” match which offers internships preferentially to applicants who match in Neurology here.
  • Applicants may also apply for the regular, independent (not linked to Neurology) Preliminary Internship in Medicine at BIDMC.
  • The application for the linked MedNeuro Preliminary year in Medicine is the same as that for the independent (non linked) Preliminary Internship year. One application covers both types of internship, and the internship activities are identical. To apply please contact: http://www.bidmc.org/Medical-Education/Departments/Medicine/Residency-in-Internal-Medicine/What-We-Do/Internship.aspx
  • If you wish to do your Medicine internship and Neurology residency at BIDMC, please be sure to apply for the internship, as above, and submit rank lists for both the Neurology and Medicine programs.
  • We also have a strong connection to the excellent Preliminary Internship year at the BIDMC- and Harvard Medical School-affiliated program at Mount Auburn Hospital.  If you are interested in doing both Neurology residency and Medicine internship in Boston, please take a look and consider applying at:   http://www.mountauburnhospital.org/medical-education/internal-medicine-residency/

International Medical Graduates:
In addition to all of the items requested in the ERAS application, to be considered, International Medical Graduates must:

  1. possess an ECFMG certificate by the time applications are reviewed,
  2. have been active in the practice of medicine (either as a medical student or a resident or independent practitioner) within the last 2 years,
  3. have passed the USMLE steps 1 and 2, and
  4. have at least two months of U.S. clinical experience with patient responsibility (usually as official clerkships in US medical schools), with letters of recommendation from those rotations. “Observerships” are not considered U.S. clinical experience.

Interview selection
All applications are reviewed by the Program Director and Associate Program Director. Interviews are offered starting in late October but continuing through the interview season. Interviews are scheduled for Fridays during November, December, and January.
